How Dye Sublimation Works
Sublimation printing uses heat to transform solid dye directly into a gas, which then bonds permanently with polyester fibres at a molecular level — rather than sitting as a layer on top of the fabric, as screen printing or DTG does. The result is a print that becomes genuinely part of the fabric.
Why It's Different from Other Print Methods
Because the dye is embedded in the fibre rather than layered on top, sublimated prints add zero texture or stiffness to the fabric — the garment feels exactly the same printed as unprinted, which matters significantly for performance and activewear where fabric hand-feel affects comfort during movement.
The Fabric Requirement
Sublimation only works effectively on polyester or high-polyester-blend fabrics, ideally in white or light base colours — the dye needs polyester fibres to bond with, and dark base fabrics will muddy or hide the printed colours.
Why It's Ideal for All-Over Print (AOP)
Because sublimation prints across the entire fabric panel before garment construction, it enables genuinely seamless, full-garment, edge-to-edge designs — something screen printing and embroidery simply can't achieve on a single flat panel.
Best Applications
Sublimation excels for activewear and sportswear (leggings, jerseys, compression wear), all-over print hoodies and t-shirts, and any design requiring photo-realistic colour gradients or complex patterns across the full garment.
Durability Advantage
Because the dye is embedded rather than surface-applied, sublimated prints resist cracking, peeling, and fading through repeated washing far better than surface-print methods — a genuine advantage for activewear that sees frequent, high-intensity laundering.
Limitations to Know
Sublimation doesn't work well on 100% cotton (the fibres don't bond with the dye the same way) or on dark fabrics (the white polyester base is needed for accurate colour reproduction) — so it's not a universal solution across every product category.
