Sustainable sourcing begins at the fibre level. GOTS-certified organic cotton, recycled polyester (rPET), bamboo, and Tencel/Lyocell are the most widely available sustainable fabric options in apparel manufacturing today, each with a lower environmental footprint than conventional cotton or virgin polyester.
Water Usage
Conventional textile dyeing is one of the most water-intensive parts of apparel production. Look for manufacturers using closed-loop water systems, which recycle and treat water rather than discharging it — some facilities report reductions of 60% or more in water consumption through this approach.
Chemical Safety
OEKO-TEX certification verifies that a finished garment contains no harmful chemical residues from dyes or finishing processes — an important layer of sustainability that's separate from, but complementary to, organic fibre sourcing.
Worker Welfare
Sustainability isn't only environmental. SEDEX/SMETA and BSCI audits verify fair wages, reasonable working hours, and safe conditions — genuine social sustainability, not just a marketing claim.
Sustainable Printing
Water-based inks, discharge printing, and eco-friendly DTG methods significantly reduce the chemical load compared to traditional plastisol screen printing, while still delivering strong colour results.
Packaging
Biodegradable poly bags and recycled cardboard boxes are increasingly available at minimal cost premiums, and they're an easy, visible way to extend sustainability messaging to the unboxing experience.
Waste Reduction
Ask manufacturers directly how they handle fabric offcuts. Factories with a genuine zero-waste-to-landfill policy typically recycle cutting waste into insulation, stuffing, or recycled yarn rather than discarding it.
How to Avoid Greenwashing Your Own Brand
Only claim certifications you can document. If your fabric is GOTS certified but your printing uses standard plastisol ink, say so accurately rather than implying the whole product is "eco" — increasingly, EU and UK regulators are cracking down on unsubstantiated green claims.
